The past 7 days I have felt slightly constipated with upper gi pain and nausea. I finally passed a soft black tarry stool after 3 days. I continue to have nausea and feel bloated. I have also had a great deal of emotional stress the last 2 weeks. Do you think I have an ulcer? I am a female 45 years 5'4 130
Hi, thanks for posting your concern in the HCM. Black tarry stool, upper gi pain and nausea may definitely be the presentation of a bleeding peptic ulcer. Although haemorrhagic gastritis, esophageal varices, Meckel's diverticulum, Mallory Weiss tear, Portal gastropathy, coagulation disorder, gastric CA and many other diseases involving the upper gastr-intestinal tract including stomach and even pathology in the ascending colon may present with black tarry stool. An upper gi pain suggests that the pathology is due to some upper gi disease too. This condition should be considered as a medical emergency. You should immediately visit the ER of your local hospital or consult your local doctor to prevent life-threatening complications. Relevant blood tests and imaging may be necessary to come to a final diagnosis. Endoscopic visualization may also be needed for diagnoses or even for treatment. If you have been taking any analgesic or antiplatelet medication, you should stop it till further advice and again I should remind you that you need to consult a local doctor at the earliest. In patient management may also be necessary. For any further query, please write back to us. Regards. Dr. Kaushik

HI
Thanks for posting your query in HCM
Black tarry stools means some bleeding is happening in the stomach . ANd most common cause of bleed in stomach is Ulcer , other less common causes are Gastric Erosions , Tumours , Vascular abnormalities .
I advise you get an Upper Gastro-Intestinal Endoscopy done to know whats the cause . If its an ulcer you may requires long term Antacids and PPI's which your doctor will prescribe .
But get the endoscopy as early as possible .
