What Are The Symptoms Of Potential Gout?

I've always retained water in my ankles (am a 61 year old woman) but take a diuretic. Had surgery 2 months ago for a non fusion caused by surgery in Dec. 09 to repair bunion and remove 2 Morton's neuromas. The surgery 2 mo. ago was successful but I continued to have pain similar to that of a Morton's neuroma or stress fracture. My daughter's wedding was last friday night and I was on my feet too long, causing my foot to swell. The ankle was hugely swollen and the top of the foot is still very very swollen, red, hot, and shiny. I have been in bed ever since I got home Friday night, with ice on my foot and an orthopedic sock on the foot. I've been taking hydrocodone for the pain and it doesn't hurt much while I'm in bed. I have SLE and spend a lot of time in bed. Could this be gout? I've had neuromas and stress fractures but they have never swollen like this. Will call my doctor tomorrow but because of the holiday weekend have elected to stay in bed and wait. Thanks!

Hello

I have studied your case,

I would like to keep possibility of gout as per your history and symptoms.
In gout there is accumulation of uric acid crystals in joint mainly foot. This leads to swelling and redness in foot.
Another differential can be nerve compression leading to tingling and swelling.
Or it can be soft tissue injury due to trauma which is not seen on x ray and may need MRI if remains persistent.
I will advise to do blood inv like complete blood count ,uric acid level, if required EMG –NCV[ nerve study] and MRI spine after clinical examination.

Till time take analgesic and neurotropic like methylcobalamine and pregabalin consulting your doctor.
If gout is confirmed you may need medicine accordingly and diet restriction

Hope this answers your query. If you have additional questions or follow up queries then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your queries.

Wishing you good health.

Take care.
