What Can I Do To Reduce Severe Acid Reflux Caused By Nortriptyline Intake?

My doctor changed my Nortriptyline dose to 50 mg a day last Friday. I noticed 2 or 3 days ago that a short time after I take a dose, I develop severe burning heartburn. It spreads through my whole chest and to my back. What can I do to lessen this side effect. It is so severe I thought at first I was having a heart attack. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello and welcome to the “Ask me Doctor” service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

I suggest to take the medicine after taking meal. Also take capsule omeprazole 20 mg 1-2 hour before meal to prevent gastritis caused by nortryptiline.

Omeprazole can be taken 12 hourly. avoid long term use of it.
