What Can Be Done To Stop Severe Itching After Taking Cephalexin For Severe UTI With Allergy To Penicillin?

My mother, age 90, took Cephalexin, 500 mg.capsules, for a very long-term urinary infection and she s now itching all over. She had told her Dr. that she is allergic to penicillin before he prescribed it, but he said, well, it just has a little in it...it shouldn t hurt you... She has now stopped taking the medication, has taken the Claritin that the Dr. advised, but says that it does not help. She is still itching, a good week after. Will the itching go away by itself? What can she do to help it to do so?

Thanks for the query to H.C.M. Forum.
Once antigen antibody reaction occurs it take some time to resolve.
I would like to recommend give her antihistamine like monteleukast+fexofenadine ( combo pack) 1-1 for 7-10 days along steroid ( methylprednisolone 16 mg ) only for 1-2 days .
Local steroid lotion are also helpful in such type of cases .
I usually prescribe steroid only for 1-2 days, not more than this.
You can also give her some sedative drugs only for 1-2 days.
Still no relief ,consult a physician and get his opinion.
