What Can Cause Extreme Pain And Swelling Behind The Ankle?

My husband woke up this morning with extreme pain in the back of his ankle, about 4 inches up from the bottom of his heel, and now the back of his ankle is swollen. We re not sure what to do as he didn t do anything to injure it. Any information would be appreciated.

The extreme pain and swelling can be related to an injury- can be bone or ligament injury. MRI scan is needed for proper diagnosis.
