What Can Cause Headache And Vomits With Bloody Mucus?

my son has been up all night throwing up, and has diarrhea that is bloody mucus. He isnt running a fever. I have been pushing fluids in him because he has a headache and I dont want the dehydration to get bad. Is the bloody mucus stool normal when a child has diarrhea?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Bloody mucus while having diarrhea and throwing up are indicating acute gastroenteritis. That is not a good symptom. We should exclude inflammatory bowel disease or infectious bowel disease.

So, I highly recommend sending him to ER (Emergency Room) as soon as possible although no fever running. If you can, keep his bloody feces to show to pediatrician. Stool analysis and culture of feces should be carried out.

If no inflammatory/infectious disease, then, blood is due to laceration of bowel mucosa due to frequent stool.

Until then, you send him to ER, I advise to give the following treatment, if he can keep without throwing:

- Plenty of fluids to keep well hydrated
- Oral rehydration salts to replace the lost fluids
- Tasectan for diarrhea
- Probiotics to stabilize intestinal flora

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Albana Sejdini
