What Caused Popping Sound Followed By Horrible Pain?

On august 1st I was walking up two flights and of stairs then suddenly there was a big pop, I could hear it and the pain has been horrible. I am not sure if it is a tear in a muscle, ligament or tendon? What am I suppose to be doing? should I have an MRI to determine the damage done? It is no better then when I did it.
