Hi! Good morning. I am Dr Shareef answering your query.
Barret
esophagus is due to
constant inflammation of the lower end of esophagus by the regurgitation of acidic material from the stomach. Gallstones are due to chemical imbalances of the constituents of bile. If I were your doctor, I would advise your son not to eat from outside specially the oily, fried, spicy fast food kine of things. Any oily food would precipitate the laxity of the esophageal sphincter making the
GERD worse, and also make the
gall bladder contract and cause the pain worse. So he would have to completely abstain himself from such kind of food, and also should completely avoid alcoholic beverages and
smoking in case he does.
Apart from this, the following could improve his GERD symptoms:
1) Elevate the head end of the bed with two blocks on each side, so that the regurgitation does not occur while lying down, and the contents of esophagus and stomach flow down with gravity.
2) Some modification in your diet like more of roughage, enough liquids, avoidance of oily, fried, and fast food
3) Regular routine exercises like morning walk depending on your medical fitness.
4) Prescription for a prokinetic agent and a
proton pump inhibitor for symptomatic relief and to have a control on the acid production and facilitate movement of gastric contents downwards.
I would like to mention that
gall stones could also be a reason for such symptoms of GERD, and consideration for surgery for the gall stone should be there while discussing with your doctor. The final decision would be by the doctor under whom he is under treatment, who could decide on this only after a physical examination and related investigations.
I hope this information would help you in discussing with your family physician/treating doctor in further management of your problem. Please do not hesitate to ask in case of any further doubts.
Thanks for choosing health care magic to clear doubts on your health problems. I wish you an early recovery. Dr Shareef
