What Causes A Low Platelet Count?

My blood platelet level has been continuing to drop, after a few months of blood tests the GP told me that she was unsure of the cause of this..... and said dangerous level is 50. My recent test showed level 105 platelet count, she wasn t sure what to do next so she said she would wait another month for another blood test and if drops again she will refer me to a specialist. What is causing this? Should I be worried as I have to wait another month....

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi,

Do you have any symptoms related? A count of 105 alone is not an emergency and we can wait for next month, but we have to consider any symptoms, report of peripheral blood smear and status of other cell counts in blood (white cells and red cells). If other cells are normal and no any symptoms, we can wait. If persisting, we can do further evaluation, which might include a bone marrow study.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Muhammed Aslam T. K., Pediatrician
