What Causes A Medium Sized Nodule On Right Side Of Thyroid?
I WAS HAVING A REGULAR GYNOCOLOGICAL EXAM, AND DURING MY EXAM MY DOCTOR NOTICED A KNOT IN MY THROAT, SHE SENT ME FOR AN ULTRASOUND AND I WAS DIAGNOSED WITH HAVING A MEDIUM SIZED NODULE ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF MY THYROID.. SHE RECOMMENDED THAT I SEE A REGULAR MD TO HAVE IT FURTHER EVALUATED AND TO MAKE SURE IT IS NOT CANCEROUS. I ALSO HAVE ALL OF THE SYMPTOMS OF HYPOTHYROID. AND SO I WAS WONDERING IF I DO HAVE HYPOTHYROID IS THAT WHAT COULD HAVE CAUSED THE NODULE TO FORM? AND, IF MY DOCTOR TREATS ME WITH MEDS FOR THE HYPOTHYROID WILL THAT ALSO HELP THE NODULE MAYBE TO DISAPEAR? I AM REALLY SCARED OF THIS THING, SINCE I AM WAITING FOR MY SCHEULED APPOINTMENT AT THE END OF APRIL TO SEE THE REGULAR MD I HAVE YET TO HAVE FURTHER TESTING TO MAKE SURE THAT IT IS NOT CANCER, AND SO MY MIND IS RACING AS TO WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN EXACTLY. I AM ONLY 38 YRS OLD, AND I HAVE TO VERY SMALL CHILDREN. I GUESS I AM JUST LOOKING FOR SOME REASSURANCE THAT I SHOULDN'T BE SO SCARED.. THANKS.....
Ok. Please don't stress. The symptoms of hypothyroidism (feeling cold, thin hair, weight gain, low energy) are very vague and are not specific to just hypothyroidism. The way hypothyroidism is diagnosed is via a simple blood test called a TSH, which any doctor (including your OBGYN) can order. I would suggest calling her and having her order the test so you have results when you see your Primary Care.
Having a nodule in your thyroid can be due to a simple cyst (common and nothing to worry about), or something more serious like thyroid cancer. Your primary care may order an ultrasound of your thyroid to see what the nodule looks like, and decide how to proceed from there. He may ultimately want to sample the nodule with a needle to determine whether or not it is cancer. Most thyroid cancer is papillary thyroid cancer, which has a good prognosis. Try not to stress.
