What Causes A Missed Period, Nausea And Tiredness?

I ve never been pregnant. I haven t been told that I cannot have children. Actually I ve never been checked. I am a type 2 diabetic. I ve been diabetic since I was 30, I am now 43. I just had liposuction. I lost weight and controlled my sugars before my surgery. I have noticed that after the surgery, my sugars are better controlled. I never had regular periods since I first began when I was 13. My periods began to be more regular when I started eating healthy and exercising almost two years ago. They were really on track, almost a year ago. For the first time since then, I missed a period. I have been feeling nauseated and really tired. I gave up on ever getting pregnant. I do not want to get my hopes up but can liposuction affect that?

Hello,

You have a history of being diabetic since many years. Presently you have controlled blood sugar level. You had liposuction done and are now experiencing missed periods, nausea and tiredness. You have not mentioned if you are sexually active or not. You have not given any information about the type of contraceptive method you use. However, if you had unprotected sex and did not take any contraceptive aid, you are suggested to get clinically examined by a gynecologist, get tests done to confirm if you are pregnant or not.

You will be accordingly managed. Stay well hydrated and avoid any stress or anxiety. Stress, anxiety, poor general heath condition, anemia, PCOS, thyroid issues, hormonal changes are few conditions that may cause missed periods and the symptoms you are experiencing. Weight loss pills, certain medications, sudden change in weight can also cause delayed or missed periods. Body fat percentage less than 17% can also affect menstrual cycle and lead to a lack of periods.

Yes, your symptoms can be due to side effects of liposuction. Menstrual irregularities with premature or delayed onset of periods is a side effect of liposuction. Other symptoms are flushing of face, neck and upper chest, it goes away in a day or two. Take home made nutritious diet rich in iron, calcium and proteins. Take adequate rest. Stay away from addictions if any.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
