What Causes A Radiating Pain In The Shoulder?

I am a 62 year old female, discharged Thursday afternoon after four days in the hospital. Now a day and a half later I am having a pain in my left shoulder that is radiating down my shoulder to my elbow. I am also having slight upper chest tightness but no pain. Blood pressure is 138/82, but I am due to take my am meds of Atenolol and Losartan. I was given 7.5 Coumidin and 120 of Heprin at discharge. Should I be worried about the Pain ? YYYY@YYYY

HI
Thanks for posting your query to Healthcaremagic .

Two probable causes for your symptoms are :

1. Cervical Radiculapathy : It's a condition where you nerve which supplies the back of head , neck shoulder hand , chest and back gets compressed between the neck bones and causes pain in its area of distribution ( that is in the area mentioned above )

2. Acute Coronary SYndrome : Is a condition where blood supply to the heart is reduced causing some oxygen deprivation to heart and the heart starts getting damaged .

If you were my patient I would have first tested you for Acute Coronary SYndrome by doing EKG , Troponin I test and 2D Echo. And if it comes out normal then test for Cervical Radiculapathy with an X ray cervical spine or an MRI Cervical spine .

I advise you consult your doctor again for the evaluation .

Hope this answers your query .
