What Causes A Sudden Electric Shock Like Painful Sensation In Knee And Legs?

If I turn to suddenly, I have like an electric shock in my knee that runs down my whole leg. Well it so painful that it feels as if it is from the knee down. I did have an osteotomy in 2005 but my knee has gone back to the way it was before the surgery. It was bone on bone. Is this wear and tear on the knee joint and do you think I need a knee replacement?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

You have a history of osteotomy done in 2005, now you are having electric shock-like pain in the knee radiating down the legs.

You are suggested to get physically examined by an orthopedic or your treating doctor to detect any complications of osteotomy like stiffness to the knee joint, injury to the nerves & vessels or any infection. You may have to go through some investigations.

Whether you need a knee replacement or not will depend on your blood & Imaging reports.

Other medical conditions that may cause such symptoms are sciatica, osteoarthritis, arachnoiditis or peripheral neuropathy. Get evaluated & treated at the earliest.

For the pain, you may take analgesics or NSAIDs, physiotherapy & exercises.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
