Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Abdominal Discomfort In An Elderly Person?
I am 75 years old. This past year I wake up with lower stomach discomfort. It helps if I get up and drink water. Also coffee in the morning. During the day I am not troubled, however if I lie down the symptoms are there, but not as bad as early in the morning. I had a colonoscopy 3 weeks ago, 2 polyps were found 1 precancerous.
I am sorry for the lower stomach discomfort you are having. If getting up and drinking water helps, then, this discomfort could be due to hyperacidity problems of the stomach. Upper endoscopy will help in further diagnosis. If you are having bloating too, then, inflammatory bowel diseases are to get further investigated through abdominal ultrasound and blood tests. Next, stool examination is also recommended.
For the moment, I advise to: • Have your dinner not less than 4 hours before going to bed • If constipated, try to regulate your bowel movements through diet changes • Take antacids • If bloating, take Simethicone and probiotics
If this won't help, should consult further with your gastroenterologist for more specific tests.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Albana Sejdini
