What Causes Anal Leakage?

Hello! I have a a problem with anal leakage. I am a heavy smoker at 22 yrs old, 5'4", 120lbs. I don't end up eating a lot during the day becaus of the cigarettes. I feel with a combination of my anxiety and an excess of cigarette without food is causing my leakage. Is this a realistic thought?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Leakage of stool may be related to local causes like low anal sphincter tone, spina bifida exhibiting this symptom as you are 22 years now.

Proctocolitis can cause lots of mucus production and cause leakage due to easy slippery passage. IBS that is irritable bowel syndrome can also cause similar problems as you have severe anxiety. Excessive smoking and not eating normally may not cause this.

I would advise you the following in such a situation.
Consult a general surgeon for clinical evaluation, examination, per rectal digital examination, colonoscopy and general examination to find other causes as discussed above.
• Tests of blood and stool.
• CT scan of the abdomen.
• Stop smoking.
• Take small frequent meals.
• Watch for the food and beverages that instigate or enhance the problems.

Get treated for the cause thus found and you will be fine.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T Chandrakant
