Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am taking Gabapentin 300 mg. 3x a day I have been taking it for one week mow and yesterday I noticed a slight swelling in my ankles and maybe hands. Tonight my ankles are swollen. I looked on line at SE and it said to call your dr. if this happens. What is going on? He dx. me with Brachioradial pruritus. He said I had arthritis in spine.
The swelling you noticed is called edema and is a common side effect of Gabapentin. It is unlikely to be associated with brachioradial pruritis or arthritis of the spine as they come with their own set of symptoms.
Gabapentin drug, based on its dosage can cause some amount of fluid retention resulting in this swelling of the hands and feet. It is not an emergency. Do not stop cold turkey with your medication as it is an anti-convulsant.
You could consult with your prescribing doctor to reduce the dose or add a diuretic. Additionally decreasing your salt intake will also help.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Pranav Balakrishnan
