What Causes Baby To Bend Backwards Causing Potential For Injury?

My 15th month grandson old throws his head backwards and in the last 2 weeks the behavior has gotten worse he now hits his head from side to side on the top of his playpen and the chair arm. He also has been going through a biting stage where he tries to bit me and his Mom. Last night his Mom told me that he banged his head on his crib, as well. I have tried to comfort him when he does this as well as trying to protect him from hurting himself. When he started to do this; I would tell him No and after 3 warnings, I would put him down in his playpen and leave the room. This worked for about 3 weeks; but once he started hitting his head on the top of his playpen, as well as other hard surfaces; I ve begun to become more concerned. Is there any other alternatives to correcting this behavior? I would greatly appreciate any advice you could give me, as I am his caregiver because his Mom works really long hours. Thank you, Sincerely, Sara J. Carneal

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi Mrs. Sara,
Welcome to HCM forum,
I understand your concern very well. Such behavior is commonly seen in children in this age group. I get plenty of patients with similar complaints and I would say my own son does this. Its a kind of attention seeking behavior that children employ. what ever you have been doing is very good and i would suggest you continue doing the same. Try not to give too much attention when he does that. If you do that, then he keeps doing it very frequently to get your attention. However, you should be keeping a track of what he is doing and if you feel its going way too much that would hurt him, then you have to prevent him.
There is no medicine for this problem. Only behavior modification is the therapy and I would like to assure you that these things will get normalised as the child grows.
Hope I answered you query adequately.
Take care. Stay healthy
