What Causes Bad Bruising After Sudden Itching On The Outer Thigh?

I had a sudden itch on my outer thigh and after a light scratch it bruised quite badly and felt like i'd knocked it. Took over a week for the bruise to completely go. This has happened several times this past year or so. Do you have any idea what is causing this?

Hello,
I have gone through your query and understand your concern.

I suspect you may be suffering from a condition called Meralgia Paresthesia.
Because you have itchy sensation typically in the outer thigh region and this may urge you to scratch badly and resulting in Bruise.

Further you have recurrent attacks in past few years.
Now we have to find the cause for this Meralgia paresthesia.
It is nothing but a compression and entrapment of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve as it passes from the pelvis into the leg.
Our main aim is to identify and remove the causative factor for this compression.
I recommend you to get examined by your treating orthopedician. He may examine and find the causative factors like bony compression or swelling which compressing the nerve.
Further he may recommend some blood tests to rule out Diabetes, liver failure.
Apart from this autoimmune disease, collagen disorders, obesity and wearing tight clothing may also cause meralgia paresthesia.
He may refer you for X-ray, CT and MRI scan as well as Ultrasound abdomen and pelvis to find the possible cause.

Depending upon the cause, he may treat you with either medications or surgery.

Hope this helps.
Please write back for further queries.
Wishing you good health.
