What Causes Black Discolouration On Back Of The Tongue?

I noticed my 6 mo old has a slight black color on the back of his tongue. We just started feeding him in the last couple of weeks, but hasn't had anything purple. What is the cause of this? He had been strictly breastfed for the first 6 months. Now we are breastfeeding and giving a couple of tablespoons of food a day.

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..
As per your complain there seems nothing serious as the slight black discolouration of the back of the tongue can be due entrapment of dead cells and debris by the tongue papilla as well as bacterial growth in that area which can also produce coloured chemicals or toxins leading to discolouration..
But for confirmation a clinical examination is a must and you should consult a Paediatrician..
In case if it is only deposits over the tongue you can use a soft toothbrush and soak it in water and gently clean the tongue by scraping it and the debris will gently get removed..
Feed your child well with water, milk and some semi-solid and solid food..

Hope this information helps..
