Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hello, I have been using antibiotics for 2-3 days and I stopped using it after I had a bloody diarrhea. I didnt see any blood 2 days after I stopped the antibiotics. But 7-8 days later (which is today) I had a black and play dough/plastic smelling stool. Is there a bleeding or am I still having the side effects of antibiotics? If I go to the doctor how they would diagnose this with a clonoscopy? Ultrasound? Or just checking my stool? I m kinda scared of colonscopy. 21/Male
Hi. Thanks for your query. Noted the history and understood the concerns. I can understand your anxiety with colonoscopy. You need not worry as this is the last investigations if other investigations and treatment fail to give you the results. For bleeding per-rectum followed by black , smelly stools the best investigations are as follows that your Doctor may advise you: Tests of stool: routine, microscopy, occult blood and so on. Tests of blood for CBC and other necessary investigations as per the clinical picture. X-ray and ultrasonography of abdomen may not be that much helpful. The antibiotic might not have been the cause of the bleeding in stools. You well be treated as per the clinical evaluation, examination and correlation with the reports of investigations.
