Hi, My mother who is 59 years old is suffering from bleeding while passing her stool. This initially happened in 2004 once and stopped on its own. Again it happened for a few days in 2008 and again stopped after taking some antibiotics prescribed by a general physician. Again the problem has started from November 2010. It doesnot happen everyday but most of the days, it is not painful and fresh blood fall after the stool has passed completelely. Plesae help

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Your symptoms seem to be related to hemorrhoids. Some advices that I can give to you are:

- Add fiber to your diet slowly to avoid problems with gas.
- Apply an over-the-counter hemorrhoid cream or suppository containing hydrocortisone.
- Use pads containing witch hazel or a numbing agent.
- Soak regularly in a warm bath or sitz bath.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Dorina Gurabardhi
