Hi,

One possible complication of diverticulitis is rectal bleeding. The bleeding occurs when the inflamed diverticula rupture and bleeds into the colon. The bleeding may be bright red or dark and tarry, depending on the location and severity of the bleeding. The bleeding may be minor or significant, and it may occur intermittently or continuously.

If you have been diagnosed with diverticulitis and are experiencing rectal bleeding, it is important to see a doctor as soon as possible. Rectal bleeding can be a sign of a more serious condition, such as colon cancer or inflammatory bowel disease. Your doctor may perform a colonoscopy or other tests to determine the cause of the bleeding and develop a treatment plan.

In the meantime, it is important to avoid constipation and straining during bowel movements, as this can worsen diverticulitis and increase the risk of bleeding. You may also need to make changes to your diet, such as increasing your fiber intake or avoiding certain foods that can trigger symptoms. Quitting smoking can also help improve your overall digestive health and reduce your risk of complications from diverticulitis.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
