What Causes Blood In Bowels With Pain In Abdomen?

i have been having bloody poops for the last few days and i am also having pain in my abdomin witch may or may not be from extra activities the last couple days as well. i would say it is more of a lighter red. i am on birth control but i think i have messed it up and may be on the wrong day of it or something. i am on the last day of takeing the pill. i hope that the bleeding will stop but i am afraid of fainting, last period i fainted and i think it may have been because of blood loss and that i was on the wrong pill day. not sure whats going on but i am kind of nervouse now. any sugestions? thank you

Hi,

Blood in stool and pain in abdomen is suggestive of colitis with ulceration or a polyp or a mass. This is most probably not related to the contraceptive pills that you are taking. Hence I would advise you the following:
- Consult your doctor and get a referral for a gastroenterologist for clinical evaluation and investigations as follows:
- Tests of stool for three days.
- Tests of blood.
- Ultrasonography of abdomen and CT scan if required.
- Colonoscopy and biopsy as may be needed.

All these will the most probable diagnosis for you to get a proper treatment. Till then you may need an oral antibiotic, Metronidazole, and probiotic on prescription from your doctor. Take care.
