What Causes Blood In Urine And Stools?

I have a friend admitted to hosptal with suspected liver failure,jaundiced,he is diabetic,whilst in for three weeks has deterioted,has a swollen abdomen,bleeding in vomit,urine and stools,was transferred to high dependency unit, all relevant tests have been performed,liver biopsy...etc,the doc has not given a diagnosis but has now been transferred back to the acute illness ward with no diagnosis,shouldnt he be kept in high dependency or have they given up?
