What Causes Blood In Urine, Dizziness And Swollen Lymph Nodes?

My mother is 82 years old and has a history of afib. She was just released from the hospital after being treated for afib due to low potassium and was prescribed a new med, flecainide. She is now experiencing the following symptoms: blood in urine, dizziness, swollen gland, stomach pain, swollen feet, shortness of breath. We called her cardiologist on call, who said she has a UTI. She has a history of UTI and she knows when she has one, and this is totally different. Can you help us determine if these symptoms are side effects of flecainide or a UTI?

Hi,

Noted the history about your 82-year-old mother and understood the concerns. Flecainide is given in Atrial fibrillation that is A fib for which your mother has been prescribed this particular medicine. Surely this is a great medicine for the heart problems and thus given in a good faith.

But surely it has some side effects like Dizziness, vision problems (such as blurred vision, problems focusing, seeing spots), shortness of breath, headache, nausea, shaking, tiredness, or weakness. Hence it is best to decide whether the symptoms are due to urinary tract infection with septicemia or due to medicine that has been prescribed.

This can be decided by the doctor. Hence I would advise you to take her to ER so that an appropriate clinical evaluation and investigations can be done to see for the cause, have a proper diagnosis for having proper management.

Blood in urine and some other symptoms can surely be due urinary tract infection. Hence I would advise the following in such a situation: Get her to ER for clinical evaluation, examination and relevant investigations of blood, urine, stool; ultrasonography of abdomen to get a preliminary diagnosis so that an appropriate management can be done.

If any other disease is diagnosis she will get a proper management. Swollen lymph nodes can be due to an infection or so. Hence look for the cause. A course of an antibiotic and an anti-inflammatory medication can be help to resolve this issue.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
