What Causes Blood In Urine While On Cipro For UTI Treatment?

Hi. I am a 30-year old female who is on Cipro 500 mg for UTI/Kidney infection. The last couple of days I ve started to notice blood in my urine, and sometimes, small strings or clots of blood as well. I ve been on Cipro for 4 days and have 1 to go. I m also taking 2 cranberry supplements per day. Unfortunately, I lost my mother 2 months ago and my employer let me go because I chose to be with my mother in her final days, and not at work. Therefore, I have no insurance. I called my PCP and explained my symptoms and they called in Cipro (sorry; a bit out of order). Anyway...could the blood and clots or whatever they are be because the Cipro is cleaning out my system and it is just a nasty infection? I ve asked my PCP; I wanted a second opinion. I m anxious and can t afford a bunch of testing - just a bit of reassurance, maybe?

Your symptoms are basically due to severe infection of Bladder (Cystitis)

Though you are taking antibiotic Ciprofloxacin, the organisms may not be sensitive or mildly sensitive to Ciprofloxacin making it not to get desired results .

In such situation it is always better to do Urine culture and sensitivity test which gives clear idea about nature of organisms causing infection and antibiotic to which they are sensitive to ,so that you can take appropriate antibiotic to control the infection .

Though it involves some cost it saves money by avoiding trial of taking multiple antibiotics taken without knowing the organisms and their sensitivity pattern.

Please go ahead and get it done and take appropriate antibiotic as per culture report.It will help to resolve your problem at earliest.

Ensure to drink more water..This will help to keep your dilute and to clear hematuria .
