What Causes Blood Streaked Stools?

Bright red blood streaked stools and now blood in toilet. Every bowel movement has mucous in it. No Pain. Yesterday I had a BM about 50/50 mucous/stool. My doctor said she thinks it is an internal hemmorhoid caused by pushing,as I was constipated because I am on Effexor. No examination of the are was done. The constipation is managed with prunes. The blood and mucous are present wether or not I am constipated. Other than anxiety I am a 38 year old healthy female. quit smoking 2 years ago, alcohol use 1-2 per week.

Hi,
Thanks for posting your query.
I am Dr.R.K and I am pleased to assist you.
Blood streaked stools with history of constipation is most likely to be due to anal fissure.
The next possible less likely cause is malignancy.
A digital rectal examination and if needed a sigmoidoscopy may be done to confirm the diagnosis.
Take high fiber diet, stool softeners and drink lot of fluids to get good bowel movements.
A sitz bath and topical diltiact would provide symptom relief along with the above measures if your symptoms are due to anal fissure.
I hope that answers your question.
Regards,
Dr.R.K.
