What Causes Body Imbalance?

My father said he feels like his brain is telling him to turn in one direction all of a sudden when sitting or standing, it is knocking him off balance, like he is being pulled to turn. His MD told him it was an inner ear thing, with therapy it will be helped but still be present. This doesn t sound right to me.
