Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Boil Between The Anus And Vagina With A History Of Colectomy And Ileostomy?
I had a, what I believed to be boil, lanced by my primary care physician about a week ago. This boil is located between the anus and vagina off a bit to the left. She placed me on sitz baths twice a day, an antibiotic topical ointment and a course of Bactrim. Thursday, I noticed no change and went back to the office and was seen by her associate who told me to go to my colorectal surgeon. I had a total colectomy with end ileostomy June 28, 2010 because of ulcerative proctitis. He did not sew the anus closed but did remove the rectum and colon. My concern is that the first physician lanced something other than a boil and am getting slightly paranoid that this could be cancer. I am seeing my colorectal surgeon on Wednesday.
Hi. Thanks for your query. Noted the history and understood your concerns. Since you have undergone colectomy with end-ileostomy and the anus is not closed the most probable cause I can think about for the lump incised in between the anus and vagina is a boil only. Cancer is not known to occur at this site and cyst formation with abscess formation is known to occur in this area. So do not unnecessarily get anxious or so. Consult your Surgeon for clinical evaluation, examination and proper management with oral antibiotics, anti-inflammatory medications, apply Liquid Povidone locally with dressing if required and get proper incision and drainage or excision of the area if required.
