What Causes Brown Spotting From Vagina?

{QUESTION} Hi There
I ve been having sex for two and a half months now and i have been taking the morning after pill almost 3 times a week because we don't want to make out using condoms. Problem is...i haven't seen my period as i know it in about a month and my vagina was spotting brown or dark blood once or twice a month.
We decided to stop using the morning after pill but still i would like to know why the brown blood and how long will it take for my normal menstrual cycle to be back.

Hallow Dear,

Regular consumption of morning after contraceptive pill is not advocated since it has got very high doses of hormone.

These pills do cause some bleeding after few days and the following period is delayed by few days to a week This stands true when occasional pill is taken in a cycle. However, since you are taking almost 8 pills in a month, the periods will be delayed for some more days or weeks.

The brown bleeding you saw was a break through bleeding due to the higher dosages of the pills. Most of the pills contain progestational medicine - Levonorgestrel or similar compound. Progesterone is known to cause break through bleeding.

At this stage, please do not take any medicine to stop the brown bleeding or induce bleeding. You will get it subsequently.

If you are so regularly engaged in sexual activities, I would suggest you to adopt some regular routine contraceptive methods like condom, birth control pills or intrauterine device. They will give you good protection against pregnancy and also will offer you stress free life.

Please visit your Gynaecologist for appropriate contraceptive advice.
