What Causes Brownish Vaginal Discharge?

Hi there, I am currently on the pill, and have been for about 2 years now. I have been in a committed relationship for a year, and skipped my period before last due to a family vacation. Since then, in the past month and a half I have noticed a slight spotting of blood after sex, but no pain. I finished my period almost two weeks ago, and for the past 2 days now have a brownish discharge that has no odour, as well as normal discharge. I have no pain, am on no medications and take the pill on schedule. Should I let my body do its thing or go see a doctor?

Hello,

In all likelihood, the cause of breakthrough bleeding while on the pill is related to the thinning of the lining of the uterus that occurs. It can lead to unpredictable spotting. It all could have been affected by not cycling the uterine lining during your family vacation. I would tell a patient to finish the current pill pack, expect a normal period, and expect that it will revert to normal with the next pill pack. If the bleeding continued, then you need to be seen and possibly have an ultrasound to rule out uterine polyps. Finally, make sure that you check a pregnancy test.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
 Dr. Timothy Raichle
