What Causes Burning Sensation In The Vagina?

Hi. I have extreme burning in vagina which started out as an annoying itch on external area. Ive had a low grade temp and tired. No burning with urination and no discharge. I thought it was yeast and called for diflucan. No luck. Tried OTC moniststat with no results. They prescribed triamcinolone with no results. Uti negative. Triaminochosos negative. Any ideas?

Hi,

Unfortunately, your symptoms (especially because your burning was external and you had a fever and felt tired) are very consistent with a herpes outbreak. Herpes typically causes burning externally followed by small blisters or sores. Sometimes, there are no blisters and the skin can just feel cracked or irritated. Herpes also usually causes systemic symptoms that can even mimic the flu, as well as back pain and burning with urination.

The fact that medication to treat yeast infections and steroid cream didn't work make sense as they are not the correct treatment.Herpes usually presents in 3-14 days after infection. However, sometimes women can have herpes already and not know it because they mistake the symptoms for something else.

I strongly suggest you see a GYN doctor to properly diagnose you at well as give you medication that will actually make you feel better. Antiviral medications are very effective against herpes and help prevent more symptoms as well as transmission.

I hope I was able to adequately answer your question today and that this information was helpful, and that you feel better soon.

Best wishes,
Dr Brown
