What Causes Burping And The Feeling Of Wanting To Gag?
my daughter has recently within this week complained of burping and wanting to gag afterwards but seems to only feel this after physical activity such as a jumping and doing flips as she is on a competitive jump rope team. Have ideas what this might be
Hi. Thanks for your query. Noted the history of your daughter complaining of burping and wanting to gag afterwards but seems to feel this only after physical activity such a jumping and doing flips, as she is on a competitive jump rope team. I think your daughter must be a child. The lower esophageal sphincter in a child is not well developed and the stomach contents can easily come up if there is any activity that increases the intra-abdominal pressure. Hence the activity of jumping and flipping causes the burping and wanting to gag as these activities increase the intra-abdominal pressure. I would advise her not to participate as the problems can unnecessarily increase her problem and can lead to GERD. It would better to take an opinion of a Gastroenterologist and get her investigated to rule out hiatal hernia.
