What Causes Chest Discomfort?

My mom is 81. She smoked for years, but has stopped for probably close to 20 I would guess. i notice she does this puffing sometimes out of nowhere, definately when she sleeps. She can be gardening or not really exerting herself and I will see her doing it. For the last 3 months, she is complaining about rattles in her chest. Her doctor has prescribed antibiotics 2x now and I guess a breathing treatment. I wonder if I should be getting her in for COPD testing?

Hi , welcome to 'Ask A Doctor' service. I have read your question and here is my advice.
You are right this could be COPD ,but not necessarily , as COPD would for long time. Your GP can assess her and confidently make a diagnosis of copd if he examines her chest, so you can talk to you doctor, if he suspect COPD ,he might tell you. This cannot be said without seeing her in detail.
Hopes i have answered your question .I would be happy to answer any further question if you have.

kind Regards n
