What Causes Chest Pain While On Trileptal?

Hi, I am a 61 year old female with MS who is taking Trileptal, although I'm tapering off of it because it caused sodium depletion. Lately I've been feeling tightness and dull pain in the center of my chest, along with difficultly breathing, when I urinate. I lean forward somewhat when I urinate -- don't know if that has anything to do with it. I also have some urinary retention due to the MS. The chest pain and shortness of breath are debilitating. (I've recently been checked out for heart issues; no problems there.)

Can you advise?

Thanks,

SCH

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Yes, chest pain and breathing difficulty is possible with Carbamazepine intake.

But it may present as anaphylactic reaction, also check for lung Infection or fluid over load in the lungs.

It may also cause eosinophilia lead to multi organ sensory dysfunction etc.

Until examination is done it is difficult to say what it is.

Avoid spicy food and alcohol avoid smoking and caffeine drunks.

Please consult your physician he will examine and treat you accordingly.

Take care.
