What Causes Clicking Sound When I Swallow My Saliva?

Yes I have a clicking sound when I swallow my saliva. It feels like something is stuck in my throat. I have seen 3 Ent doctors and a specialist. They all do not know what it is. One said it was silent reflux and I have been a omperzole for 3 months, no relief. One gave me inbroprfen 800mg and also tried naxopren, no relief. The other said my styoild cartilage was inflamed and gave me Madrol pack. no relief. The specialist at Miami University gave me injection by that area. Still no relief. This started just after a needle biospy of my thyroid nodule from my endrocronlogist, which came back clear of cancer. I went back to her and she check out the nodule to see if it was bleeding and it was not. I have also seen a chrioprector and he adjusted me but still no releif. He did a xray of my neck. My PCP is taking blood work to see if it is anything and just had another ultrsound of my thyroid nodule. Waiting for those results today. I really think it may be my hyoid bone because I feel the tip of a bone on the top left side of my throat. When I turn to the right and left and swallow, I do not have the clicking sound, only when I look straight forward. The discomfort radiates down my neck and over on my left side of chest and also feel fullness in me ear at times. It seems to be affecting my muscles or cartiagle. Can you please tell me what kind of exam and doctor to see for this. I have been to so many ENTS and they dont know what it is. I live in Florida, in West Palm Beach area. Thanks Diane Medina

Hi Diane Medina,

I have read your query and can understand your concern. As you have seen primary doctor, ENTs, chiropractor and have been through many treatments for the problem, I can give you advise to see an oral and maxillofacial surgeon once.

It might be a TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint) related problem which is near ear and helps in opening and closing as well as side to side movements of the jaw. The muscles around TMJ are associated with the movements and swallowing. In addition, the problems of TMJ or muscles around them are usually felt in ear and misdiagnosed as ear problem.

Thus, I recommend you to visit an oral and maxillofacial surgeon for physical examination of the joint and further investigations to diagnose any TMJ associated reason with the problem of clicking sound you are having.

I hope this information helps you. Thank you for choosing HealthcareMagic. I wish you feel better soon.

Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
