What Causes Collar Bone Pain And Sore Throat After Heavy Smoking And Accident?

I have been a smoker for several years(15) and over the past few I smoke 2 back to back regularly. I am 34 years old and became disabled 3 years ago due to an injury. I have become out of shape, yet maintained my weight. I am under alot of stress from my injury and tend to smoke a fair amount although I am still at a pack per day. Over the last 2 weeks my collar bone are has began to hurt and this quickly developed into my throat feeling like its trying to close on its own. Other than this I feel fine, I have an appetite, feel relatively active but cant get the pain on the left side of my collar bone to go away. Should I be worried these are signs of cancer? On a side note, I was subject to a high amount of silica dust in my previous work before my accident.

Hello,

You have not mentioned any details of your past injuries due to accident, anyways chronic smoking may trigger cervical disc degeneration and hence neck (collar bone / clavicle) pain radiating to the throat. Diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol / triglyceride, COPD or high BMI may be related with the symptoms. Get medical check up done. Make sure to breath through your nose, breathing through the mouth often causes sore throat due to dryness in smokers.

Avoid high fat diet, alcohol, cut slowly on smoking. If diabetic or hypertensive control the levels either naturally or you can take the help of medicines. Exposure to silica dust may show symptoms after many years. You are suggested to get clinically examined & get sputum test, X-ray, CT done. If positive findings are there, your treating doctor may recommend bronchoscopy or biopsy to rule out any malignancy. Treatment will depend on the severity of the pathology detected.

In the meantime, gargle your throat with salt water 3-4 times a day, take antihistamines for relieve. To reduce any lymph node swelling you can take an oral course of antibiotics (Augmentin). For any inflammation or swelling in the throat take analgesic(acetaminophen) or NSAIDS (Combiflam / Naproxen), one SOS when required. Get treated at the earliest.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
