Hi and thanks for answering. I have a similar situation to many on this subject. I was on Dilantin from the time I was 20 until I turned 67. I was convinced by some friends to drop the medication because I no longer needed it (they thought). After gradually ending the use of it I had a bad seizure at the age of 68. I was unconcious for over 30 minutes. After a barrage of tests the new doctor refused to put me on Dilantin and would only prescribe Lamotrigine. I have had no further seizures and am 70 years old now. However, I have never felt the same since taking this drug. I feel like I am in a constant fog, can t remember names, frustrated attitude, etc. I have asked him to change back to my 40 + year success with DIlantin but he will not approve the change. I need a second opinion. Thanks so much. John Carpenter
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
It is possible that you may need to see another neurologist. Dilantin is still used to treat seizures in some persons and it is effective.
Unless he can identify a specific reason that you cannot use the medication, he should consider switching you since are having side effects from the Lamotrigine and Dilantin is a viable option.
Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
