Hello,
Vomiting post AAA repair is really a serious thing. Gastrointestinal complications post repair account to significant morbidity and increased hospital stay. Here are few complications of GI tract post repair:
1) Gastritis
2) Duodenal ulcer
3) Adynamic ileus
4) GI hemorrhage
5) Enterocolitis
6) Gastric ulcer
7) Cholecystitis
8) Ischemic colitis
9) Ascites
The following are some important points to be noted:
1) You may have a nasogastric (NG) tube from your nose to your stomach for a few days to keep your stomach empty until your
colon starts to function again.
2) Although an NG tube may be somewhat uncomfortable, it prevents
nausea, vomiting, and other complications.
3) When you start to pass gas, it is a sign that your colon is working again and you’ll be started on a
liquid diet.
4) You will progress to a
soft diet “as tolerated,” that means as long as you don’t experience nausea or vomiting.
5) You will continue a soft diet for 2 to 8 weeks after surgery.
6)
Ondansetron can be given to control vomiting. Tab.
Ondem MD 4mg as and when required.
7) Nausea is common after surgery. Be sure to take your pain medication on a full stomach.
8) Stick to a soft bland diet for the first few weeks after surgery.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
