What Causes Constant Vomiting And Neck Pain Despite Taking Medications?

My 16 year old grandson has been to the ER 3 times & hospitalized once in less than 2 weeks. He has severe jaw pain with swollen gland, extreme nausea & now pain in back of neck. They did CT scan which showed no tumors. They thought it was inflammation of parotid gland. He has had no fever, but lost 8 pounds during the ordeal from not being able to keep anything down. He gets better once he has iv s, but it comes back. He had mumps immunization. He had a sty on 6/15. A couple of days later, he woke up with severe jaw pain on the other side, then vomiting for 2 days. To pediatrician, who referred him to TX Childrens ER. They hydrated him and sent him home. 2 days later, back to different Urgent Care. They admitted him to a local hospital. Stayed 3 days, felt better after iv s, nausea meds, antibiotics & steroids. Now, less than a week later, projectile vomiting & neck pain. NO FEVER THROUGHOUT.

Hi,

Noted the history about your 16 year old grandson who has recurrent vomiting, neck pain, CT scan of brain normal, gets admitted and has IV fluids and antibiotics with steroids gets okay for few days and has same problems again. Also has Neck glands.
You have mentioned projectile vomiting and in such a case central nervous system has to have the problem or obstruction in proximal small intestine.
If the CT scan of the brain is normal then it would betterfor the following:
Take an opinion for Neurological evaluation.
Spinal fluid tapping and examination for infection, tuberculosin, meningitis may help for a proper diagnosis.
Another causes for enlargement of the lumps should be found out by ultrasound of neck and glands, FNAC to know the cause, Biopsy to confirm and get treated as per the cause found.
Neck pain can be due to spinal fluid problems related to central nervous system.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, ENT & General Surgeon
