What Causes Constipation After An Umbilical Hernia Repair Surgery?

Hello... I had gallbladder/umbilical hernia repair on Wednesday, not having had a BM since Tuesday evening.... My tummy was churning and gargling since yesterday evening.. this afternoon, I was on the commode for an hour and a half trying to have my first movement since surgery.... I did not push, since I was instructed not to... After the most horrible diarrhea pains I ve ever felt, I finally had a movement. I was in a cold sweat, had nausea, and still terrible pain... I remained on the commode until the diarrhea made it s way out. Since then (a few hours ago) I ve been to the commode about every 30 to 45 minutes... The problem is, along with the pain, there is now bright red blood in my stool. I have not taken the pain meds as directed by cause I didn t want to be constipated, so I ve been just using them to take the edge off these last couple days....I m confident the pain meds aren t the problem- what could be causing this,,,and do I need to make a trip to the ER? Don t know what to do....

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Before any surgery, p/W ENEMA IS GIVEN AS A PART of preoperative preparation. As the bowel is empty, less food intake and restricted bowel movements after surgery, constipation is a usual effect after surgery. You had strained over motions (though minimal), it had caused pressure over the blood vessels around anus causing bleeding. Use Glycerine suppository/Glycerine syringe to ease defecation. Have stool softener with your doctor's advise. If the problem does not reduce/it increases, you are advised to consult the surgeon.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
