What Causes Constipation After Having Laparoscopy?

Hi I m having trouble having a bowel movement. I had a laparoscopy one month ago and since then I have been having trouble on and off going number 2. Currently it has been 4 days since my last bowel movement and laxatives are not working. Also I am in a lot of pain from being so constipated. What is causing this?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As per my clinical experience, the procedure of laparoscopy per say is not responsible for the onset of constipation, unless there was some specific procedure performed over the intestine (which is not mentioned here). However, multiple factors can contribute to the development of constipation after laparoscopy as:
- Uncorrected original disease
- Lack of intestine motility or propulsive movements
- Gastroparesis as diabetes or others
- Sedentary life
- Lack of exercises
- Junk foods and excess dairy fat
- Concomitant use of opioids or other medications

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
