What Causes Cough And Sore Throat At Nights In An Elderly Person?
in the 90's I had surgery for a hiatal hernia. It seems the symptoms have come back; at night, coughing, sore throat. It doesn't last long, but my stomach has been pooching out for some time. When I see the doctor how do they diagnose, and given my history do you think surgery would be needed again?
Some persons do not detect the post nasal drip itself but only present with related symptoms such coughing or sorethroat.
Hernia is diagnosed if there is a protrusion through a defect in a particular layer. Based on your description, a hernia may be present but this would need to be assessed by your doctor. Surgery is performed if the defect is large, hernia is causing problems or for cosmetic reasons
“As” per your clinical history is concerned yo do not need any further surgical procedures but you need modification of lifestyle which might help you -:
1)Try to eat several smaller meals throughout the day rather than a few large meals. 2)Try to avoid foods that trigger heartburn, such as chocolate, onions, spicy foods, citrus fruits and tomato-based foods. 3)Try to avoid alcohol and smoking 4)Eat at least three hours before bedtime. 5)Lose weight if you're overweight or obese. 6)Elevate the head of your bed about 15 centimeters 7)You can also take sugar-free chewing gum after meals to control your problems
Hope that helps
