What Causes Coughing Up Blood In Early Pregnancy?

Hello Dr. Rynne, Recently my daughter-in-law who is 4 months pregnant has been coughing up blood, about 1/4 of a cup when it occurs, she has no occurrence of nose bleed; it accumulates in her throat, feels like she is chocking, lacks air, then starts coughing up blood. Hello and welcome to HCM,
Coughing up blood pregnancy is alarming.
Coughing up of blood can be due to any lesion in lungs or in the throat.
Lung lesions which can cause coughing up of blood are tuberculosis, communication with hemothoax, malignancy to name a few.
Throat lesions which result in coughing of blood are trauma, ulcer, growth etc.
Firstly, the throat should be examined to look for any evidence of trauma or any other lesion.
If no abnormality is detected in throat then lungs need to be examined.
A X-ray of the lung fields needs to be initially followed by sputum examination.
Blood loss over a period of time can lead to anemia thus diagnosis and management car required at the earliest.
