What Causes Dark Colored Stool?

If your stool is dark in color such as black or green, what could be the cause of this? I'm 64 yo black male. I've had triple bi-pass, lung cancer, back, shoulder(both), and butt surgery. This does not occur often, however, it has occurred within the past month.
