What Causes Dark Discoloration Spot At The Base Of Spine?

My friend has been taking poor care of himself, drinking too much and not eating nearly enough. He also has an active physical job. Today I saw a large dark discoloration spot about two inches wide and five inches long starting at teh base of his spine. What could cause this kind of discoloration? Should i be as worried as I am?

Hello!

My name is Dr. Aida and I am glad to attend you on Healthcaremagic!

The discoloration of the skin could be related to a skin disorder (vitiligo or fungal infection) or vitamin deficiency.
For this reason, I recommend consulting with a dermatologist for a physical exam and performing some blood lab tests (complete blood count, iron plasma levels, vitamin D plasma levels, etc.).

Hope you will find this answer helpful!
Kind regards!
