What Causes Delay In Menstruation After Taking Depo Provera?

I m on depo provera and just had strep throat so I was on pretty strong antibiotics. I haven t had my period yet but I was reading that depo provera causes some woman not to get their period and the antibiotic can ruin a cycle. Is this true? Should I get a pregnancy test or is it normal to not get a period at all first month? I was on other birth control pills prior and took them religiously

Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
Depo-Provera contains 'medroxyprogesterone', which is a form of progesterone. It acts as a contraceptive by preventing ovulation. It also causes changes in the cervical mucus and uterine lining, making it harder for sperm to reach the uterus and harder for a fertilized egg to attach to the uterus.
Absent, missed or irregular menstrual periods are known side effects while you are on such depo shots. As your body adjusts to the medicine during treatment these side effects may go away.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
