What Causes Delayed Periods, sore Nipples And Back Pain?

Hi, I am 38 years old I have had 10 children vaginally. My latest is going to be 4 months old on Sept. 11th. I have not had a period yet, I am nursing, however with all y other children, by the time they were 3 months I had started my period. Anyway, for the last 5 weeks, I have been experiencing nausea, dizziness, soar nipples, and the last 3-4 days I have been cramping and have had a lot of lower back pain, it almost feels like my period is going to start. I have taken about 3 pregnancy tests, and all including the one this morning were negative. Also my husband had a vasectomy back in March and was tested twice, last time was 2nd week in June, and they said he was sterile, so we haven't been using pertection. HELP!

Dear Katrina,

During breasfeeding the menses can get delayed. More regularly you breastfeed the baby, more are the chances of delay in menses. This is due to the raised levels of hormones. Such period is called as Lactational amenorrhoea.

If you are exclusively breastfeeding the child - during day as well as night, it does provide a contraceptive protection too. However, only breastfeeding during the day and top feeding at night may continue the Lactational amenorrhoea without contraception protection.

This time your Lactational amenorrhoea has extended for one more month than what you had in your all previous pregnancies. This should not bother you. May be you are more regularly and exclusively breastfeeding the baby this time.

Agreed, you have pregnancy like symptoms. Your husband has undergone Vasectomy. I hope you had additional protection of condom during first three months after vasectomy. In vasectomy, the vas is severed at the proximal part near the testes. The sperms which are distal to the site of vasectomy are capable of fertilizing; and they need about 3 months time or 15 ejaculations to leave the body. Your husband was tested twice and has found to be sterile. I hope you did not have any intercourse before this confirmation. If this precaution was not taken, you have to confirm the status of your pregnancy.

You have carried out three pregnancy tests which have reported you to be non-pregnant. It is a better option to go for Beta hCG test which is very sensitive and can report pregnancy within 10 days of the conception when the urine pregnancy test may report false negative. If this test also reports hCG values
In that case, sore nipples may be attributed to breast feeding. If the baby is sucking the nipples instead of whole areola, it may cause sore nipples. Dizziness and nausea may be due to some other causes like gastrointestinal upsets. Please report to your Obstetrician about it.

If you are confirmed to be nonpregnant, you may take Tab. Deviry for 5 days and within 4-7 days you will get your menses. I feel from your history that you would not be pregnant. Hence, instead of doing the hCG pregnancy test, you may directly opt for Tab. Deviry test. You should get withdrawal bleeding; if you don't, you may do the above mentioned ordeal or report to your Obstetrician directly.

I hope this helps you.
