What Causes Diarrhea Post A Colectomy?

My mother had, what I understand to be a total removal of her colon. The Doctor says there is no chance of of ever have reconstruction so she would have bowel movements through the rectum, because it would result in constant diarrhea. This surgery was the results of chronic constipation that was not manged Properly. Could you please direct me to a link/cite that can help me understand better what actually happened in surgery? With pictures or video would be of great help, please.
