Hi,I am Diwashish Biswas (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Drug Induced Behavioural Abnormalities?
I went into the emergency room with pain on the left side of my neck, also left arm pain. I had bypass heart surgery eight years ago. I have a defibilaor. I was admitted and became sicker. I take several meds per day, I had a list of all my meds with me. I was given Percocet and became totally out of my mind. I had to be restrained on several occasions. I had a neck scan, brain scan, ultra sound and an Egg. All results showed nothing, normal. Can you tell me what caused my abnormal behavior? I was even t a new prescription. I left with the same meds that I was taking when I went in. I need to know what was done to me? Was I given meds that I shouldn t been given.
I can imagine that it must have been tough for you to go through this. There are a few things that need to be considered regarding the cause of your abnormal behavior.
1. If you have a history of bipolar disorder, then painkillers containing opioids can worsen the mood swings and in that case, Percocet may have pushed you into mania
2. Your abnormal behavior may have been caused by electrolyte problems, which can cause delirium. It is reversible once those disturbances are corrected.
I would recommend that you visit a psychiatrist if you have a history of mood swings. I would get electrolyte reports done if they were not done at that time.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
